Aspens- Barks and Grass

Aspens- Bark and Grass
22 x 7, oil

Felt great to be back painting with my painting knives again today. The knives give a lot of texture and also allow for a more interpretive painting. I loved how the grasses and small shrubs in this scene produced a color pattern all their own and the aspen trunks formed vertical ribs touching the sky. Fall Splendor on a Misty Day, Day 28 of the Painting Challenge

Fall Splendor on a Misty Day
12 x 12, oil
$145.00

This fall landscape was painted using my knives. It is a very textural painting. These knife paintings are very interesting. They have so many wonderful swirls of color, you never get bored looking at them. They read well from a distance and as you get closer they look more abstract. This painting is for sale on my website: SpohnStudio.com

Below you will see the value study for this painting.

Fall-2, Day 17 of the painting challenge

Fall-2
6x6, oil
Another fall scene. I like to paint them because they are so colorful. Almost like painting flowers, but not quite. You can check out the entire collection of 18 paintings so far on my website: SpohnStudio.com  This painting is for sale for $50.00.

And here it the value study for this painting...

Fiona, a second look

Fiona, A Second Look
8x8, original oil

Another version of Fiona, this time she is more simplified and painted mainly using my knives. How to decide? Texture or no? I like this simplified version. She appears timeless, and her eyes look up at the viewer, watching to see what is going on.  For more information on pet portraits, please visit my website: SpohnStudio.com

Pink Geranium

Pink Geranium
5.5 x 9 inches
oil on watercolor paper mounted on wood panel

This delightful floral was painted in the early spring. It is painted on watercolor paper and needed to be mounted to my wood panels. I finally had enough time to get this accomplished and will add this painting to my inventory for my upcoming art show in Manitou Springs.

Pink Geranium, is another textural floral painted mainly with a painting knife. Contact me to purchase, or visit my booth at the art show, Commonwheel Labor Day Festival in Memorial Park, Manitou Springs, Colorado.

Autumn Trees

Autumn Trees
30 x 30
oil and paper on boxed wood panel

This painting had an interesting creative process from start to finish. I first primed and gesso'd the board, then using matte mediums, added scraps of paper in leopard and floral motifs to sort of form the outlines of trees and bushes. I then picked up my pallet knives and started painting mixing large quantities of paint, and generously swiping them on the board resulting in a thick, textural and loose painting. In the end, almost all the paper and board are covered, but it was fun to see what would happen in this creative process.
This painting is for sale for $850.00. Contact me to figure out the shipping costs, or if you are passing by my studio, you can pick it up right here.

2012 Art Walk Donation

Floral Happiness
4 x 4
Art Walk Donation
This resplendent floral painting is a donation for the Salida Art Walk held each year in June. I plan on painting 2 pieces, and this is the first one. Last year I painted geese and they were very popular. This year, I wanted one of the paintings for feature one of my pallet knife florals.  This year the Art Walk auction will allow anyone who wants to buy the painting ahead of time for $160.00 to do so and not have to participate in the live auction. Visit their site for more information: http://salidaartwalk.org/

Butterfly Range

Butterfly Range
7 x 7 inches
oil on wood panel

This will be the last painting I will paint for my upcoming show at the Paquette Gallery in the Salida Steamplant, which will open on Saturday, March 24th. I wanted to have quite a few smaller paintings available so everyone would be able to take home a keepsake. If you live nearby, come and see the showing, the show is open until April 31st. Floral Bouquet with Bunny

Floral Bouquet with Bunny
12 x 20
oil on wood panel
I started this painting yesterday and finished it today.  I love the bright and cheery floral bouquet. I used my pallet knife for all of it, and with thoughts of Spring and Easter in the air, I added the little bunny to nibble at some of the flowers. I used to have a pet dwarf bunny years ago. They make wonderful pets. Mine was a house bunny and he was litter boxed trained also. To purchase this painting, please contact me by e-mail.  Copyright 2012, by the artist, Susan M. Spohn

Floral Garden Snippet

Garden Snippet
7 x 7
Oil on Wood Panel
I just love how this small section of a floral garden turned out today. I am moving more towards using the pallet knife in all my paintings and filling them with texture and bright colors. For this painting, I squinted a lot at the photograph to capture just the essence of the colors and flowers. This painting is for sale for $125.00 and comes with free shipping in the Continental USA.
