My Spot

My Spot
12 x 24 inches, oil on panel

I stated this painting a couple weeks ago, but had to put it aside to finish some other paintings. The cat is painted with painting knives and originally, I thought I might complete the entire painting using knives. But today is another day and most of the remainder of this painting was painted with brushes. The photo doesn't really show all the heavy texture on the fur of the cat, but in person it really shows up. Contact me to purchase. View more of my paintings on my website: SpohnStudio.com

Here is the riddle answer to #37:

DE SON BUREAU REGARDEZ TOMBER LA PLUIE means FROM HIS DESK LOOK AT RAIN FALLING

The portrait shows Barack Obama several years before he became president.
In his White House office, near his desk he hung a Childe Hassam's painting : "The Avenue in the rain".

First cryptogram, 2 triangles method , keys BARACKHUSSEINOBAMA & THEAVENUEINTHERAIN => FIND THE ONE HE REPLACED.

So we must find which painting was hung at this place when G.W.Bush was president and which was replaced by Obama.
It was a painting of an impressionist texan painter : "Near San Antonio" by Julian Onderdonk.
(you see the 2 different paintings on the left of the desk on the 2 last photos : Obama with G.W.Bush an Obama with Hillary Clinton)

Second cryptogram, Vigenère method, keys NEARSANANTONIO & JULIANONDERDONK => HE OFFERED HIM HIS PORTRAIT FOR HIS BIRTHDAY.

On his 30th birthday Onderdonk was offered his portrait by his art teacher WILLIAM MERRITT CHASE.

I was toying with the idea of painting one of my large flower pots outside, but time got away from me. Colorado Fall

Colorado Fall
24 x 36
oil on wood panel

This landscape painting was painted using 2 reference photos I took last fall. The reds, oranges and yellows may look a bit bright, but that is truly how wonderful the color shone in the bright sun against the blue skies. Fall is the perfect time of year in Colorado. I am often hiking about taking photos during this time of year. It is the only time that the trees can compete with the flowers for outrages beauty.  This painting is for sale for $950.00  Contact me regarding payment and shipping.

Winter Park Arts and Craft Show

I participated in a small arts and craft show up in Winter Park, CO, this past weekend. The weather cooperated and the show was fun. I met lots of wonderful folks. Above, a customer browses through my small daily paintings, choosing one to purchase. To view more of my paintings visit my website at: SusanMSpohn.com

Flowers are planted EVERYWHERE in Winter Park. It is a joy to visit this small mountain town.
The mediums next to Hwy. 40 are all heavily planted in flowers. As an artist and flower lover, this really is paradise! I was fortunate to meet the young lady who plants all these flowers and tends to them all summer long. She enjoyed my floral paintings, I commented on how beautifully this town landscaped with flowers....and that is how we met.

3 Sunfish

3 Sunfish
oil on wood panel

Started this painting today. I still need to add the background and add an extra dab or two here and there. But thought I would post the painting as a work in progress. During my childhood we went fishing on lakes in Northern Minnesota all the time. My favorite fish to catch were the sunfish. Here are 3 varieties that bring back memories.

Above you will see the completed painting. I kept the background simple so your focus would be on the fish. This painting is for sale, contact me regarding shipping and purchase.

Forgotten Lines

Forgotten Lines
5 x 7
oil on wood panel

Since it is summertime, how about a fish story??? Well, that is how my painting came about today. I was walking by the river and could see old fish lines laying in the water, and then I saw a trout swim by. That made me think about the title of this painting, 'Forgotten Lines'. Here is the painting that resulted from my musings. This painting is for sale for $55.00 and will include free shipping during this month of July. Red Poppies in Yellow Sunshine

Red Poppies in Yellow Sunshine
7 x 7 inches
oil on wood panel

This painting is in a bit more of a contemporary painting style. I normally prefer a more Impressionistic style, but today I focused on just the simple subject of some red poppies against yellow sunshine. Although subject is simple, I used lots of texture painting with my pallet knives. This painting is for sale for $85.00. Contact me for purchase and shipping information.

Gratitude Bouquet

Gratitude Bouquet
18 x 18
Oil on Wood Panel

Earlier this week,  a lost white female hound dog with some small black spots was running loose on our street. She came right up to me and dashed inside our building. She was just shaking and scared! She took refuge in our bathtub and refused to go anywhere else. For some reason she really took a liking to me. I searched and searched for an owner looking for her, but couldn't find one. So my neighbor, helped me bring her to Sunshine Shelter in Poncha Springs. I worried about that dog about this dog all night. Then the next day, the owner showed up at our building with a bouquet of flowers for me for taking such good care of her lost dog.

This is the painting this bouquet has inspired. It is for sale for $325.00, contact me for shipping and payment details.

There are fires everywhere in Colorado right now. No rain, and the forests and grasslands are tinder dry. So many folks have been evacuated from their homes, and many homes have already burned to the ground. It was difficult to find inspiration today, until I happened upon some photo references of these glaring flame colored flowers.  This painting is for sale for $55.00 and includes free shipping in the Continental USA for the month of June. Peacock Garden

Peacock Garden
39 x 11 inches
oil on wood panel

I started this painting a couple weeks ago and managed to get all the background flowers painted. Today I was able to paint the 2 peacocks and the yellow swallowtail butterfly along with the foreground yellow flowers. Even though the colorful tails of the peacocks are not in this painting, the Impressionistic garden colors substitute for their feathered rainbow of colors. This painting will be mounted as a wood boxed panel when it dries. $700.00  Contact me if you are interested in purchasing this unique painting.

Falling

Falling
7 x 7 inches
oil on wood panel

Even though it is VERY hot outside and fall seems a long ways off, I my painting today was inspired from photos taken last fall of leaves falling. Being blown by the wind, they dance in the air before gently touching the ground. I used my pallet knife for most of this painting.  Contact me to purchase this painting. $85.00

Coleus Planter

This painting is titled, "Coleus Planter". It is a 7 x7 inch oil on board. The coleus have leaves as pretty as flowers, and the other greenery in this planter really complimented red tones in the leaves. On these hot summer days, it is so nice to sit in the shade and view the coleus. You can purchase this painting for $85.00 which includes shipping in the continental USA.
