Many times our flower gardens are just too abundant. It is difficult to display all the wonderful flowers that are blooming. This is a small painting with a lot going on. But I love flowers and couldn't resist adding them all. Visit my website to purchase.  SpohnStudio.com

Summer Bliss

Summer Bliss

Hearing the wind blow and the tumble weeds piling up against the fence, I am reminded of all the flowers in my gardens. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the growing season lasted a lot longer? This was a local flower box spilling with flowers. Visit my website to view more paintings. SpohnStudio.com

Apens- With Friends

Aspens- Ridgetop

Aspens- Ridgetop
22 x 7, oil

The lovely white tree trunks of an aspen always seem to steal the show. Even in this painting, with fall colors in their leaves and in the ground cover, the white barks in the sunlight are memorizing. View more of my paintings on my website- SpohnStudio.com

Aspens- Barks and Grass

Aspens- Bark and Grass
22 x 7, oil

Felt great to be back painting with my painting knives again today. The knives give a lot of texture and also allow for a more interpretive painting. I loved how the grasses and small shrubs in this scene produced a color pattern all their own and the aspen trunks formed vertical ribs touching the sky. Aspens--Dance With Me

Aspens- Dance With Me
22 x 7, Oil

Aspens are magical. They can be straight and tall rising to the sky with shaking leaves; or they can have twists and turns in their trunks like they were frozen while dancing in the night. This painting depicts two of those dancers.  I wonder which song they danced with so rhythmically.

Aspens Poncha Pass 2

Aspens- Poncha Pass 2
7 x 22, oil

This is the second painting in this series. I kept the grasses a bit lighter than my photo reference. I like the brightness and feeling of the sunny day.

Treasure Chest found. Ysengrin, the Wolf and Butterflies has a new home!

Thank you Philippe Boutry for creating the riddles for this treasure hunt. The riddles from France were first published in July. Then the remaining riddles were published in August. Many tried to solve those riddles and were stumped. Personally, I found them a bit puzzling myself. But then there are those who excel at puzzle solving. Just like there are others who excel at art or writing.... When we all use our talents, the world is a better place.

The treasure chest has been found by Jason and Sarah Winder. Congratulations! The prize is an original oil painting, 12 x 12 inches, titled, ‘Ysengrin, the Wolf and Butterflies’. They had a partner in France named Eric. Eric will receive a print of the painting.

You should click HERE to view the actual digging of the treasure when they found the treasure chest! It is a great little video.  Jason reports that he is a Geocacher, so finding hidden things was one of his specialties. He said, "scavenger hunts and puzzles are things I love! I usually do all my hunting with GPS coords but really enjoy the hunts with less accuracy for more of a challenge". He reports that once he got to the area he found the treasure within 20 minutes. Several other treasure hunters were looking for the buried treasure chest before Jason but were unable to locate the exact position of the treasure chest.

Congratulations Jason and Sarah!

Value study below...
Aspens on Poncha Pass 1
7x22, oil

This is the first painting in a series of four aspen paintings all painted on the same size wood panel. I tried to look for more unusual aspens, with twisted trunks or a curve in their trunks and focus on using those images for this painting.

Marigolds and Romas

Marigold and Romas

Starting a new painting

Just getting started on a new painting. Here is a preview of one small section that has been painted today.
Sometimes I some what draw out my painting with pastels. They are great as they have colors and when I paint a lot of flowers this map will keep me on the right track. As you can see, I do not do detailed drawings. Just whimsical scratches on the panel that let me know where I want to place each flower or critter.

Stay tune to see the final results.

Here is the painting a bit further along. There is still a lot to paint.... but you can see most of the flowers now.

Zinnia Group

Zinnia Group
6x6 Oil
My zinnia's are mostly frost bitten now. A few of them struggle onward in these warmer days, so I thought I should paint them quickly. I did take lots of photos for this winter but thought a couple small paintings today would keep them fresh in my mind. You can purchase these paintings on my Etsy site.

3 Zinnias
6x6 Oil
Here is my second painting. There are some interesting purple red colors in some of these zinnias. I was trying to capture that color... but  think nature does it best.
