Marigolds and Romas

Marigold and Romas

oil, 6x6

The sun was shining brightly today giving us a reprieve from the rain, wind and clouds. So I sat out on my rooftop deck and painted this plein air painting. Marigolds are still blooming brightly in the tomato pots. I will harvest tomatoes again this weekend to make more sauce. Visit my website to purchase and view other paintings.

Besides living in a frog pond, the next best place for a frog is in your garden. What a lovely site to see a frog amongst your flowers. This frog has followed the flowers into the house to observe the arrangement in the floral bouquet. Visit my website to purchase this painting. SpohnStudio.com

5x7 greeting card

A snapshot from a zoo photo of a young giraffe, was the inspiration for this painting. I painted it fairly loose and Impressionistic. The eye had a bit more orange in it... but I liked putting more green in they eye. Visit my website to purchase: SpohnStudio.com

3 Sunfish

3 Sunfish

oil on wood panel

Started this painting today. I still need to add the background and add an extra dab or two here and there. But thought I would post the painting as a work in progress. During my childhood we went fishing on lakes in Northern Minnesota all the time. My favorite fish to catch were the sunfish. Here are 3 varieties that bring back memories.

Above you will see the completed painting. I kept the background simple so your focus would be on the fish. This painting is for sale, contact me regarding shipping and purchase.

Flamingo II

Flamingo II

7 x 7

oil on board

Didn't want to start my larger painting today, so decided to paint another smaller flamingo. Every reference photo shows the variety of flamingo colors. Some are almost white, while others are almost brick orange-red. Most are a shade of pink, and all have combinations of different shades of colored feathers. Today's flamingo painting is for sale for $125.00, contact me regarding shipping.

Christmas Wrappings

11.5 x 14

oil on watercolor paper

Getting into the holiday spirit, I started my painting with a cat reference photo and the background was very similar in color to the cat. I liked this idea but wanted to do more with it. This basket full of wrapping papers and some Christmas ornaments was just the subtle theme I was looking for to incorporate with this cute tawny cat. I really like how the floral background adds lots of pattern as do the wrapping papers and the basket, not to mention the striping on the cat! This patterning makes the painting very active, and at the same time helps your eye to rest on the cat and the quiet soft yellow wrapping paper.

This painting is for sale for $175.00, contact me by e-mail for more details and shipping information. Copyright 2012, by the artist, Susan M. Spohn

Western Scrub Jay

7 x 7

Oil on Board

With so much going on today (Salida Art Walk), (miniature auction--my 2 donations did well in $$$ raised), (an art reception at the Steamplant featuring 2 artists friends) (and the heat!), I am surprised that I was able to paint. Ah, but somehow, I managed to do another small painting.

Whenever you go camping around here you will no doubt see a scrub jay or two begging for bread, or just swooping down to try and grab some of your garbage.  I like this pose for the scrub jay, as he waits patiently in a tree, just observing.

The first image was taken right after painting, the second a day later  outside as the painting is drying.... and then I will post a final painting here once the painting is completely dry so you can hopefully see how the colors intensify and deepen....OK, I have posted the dried painting as the 3rd image. It was darkening with clouds outside, so the actual painting is brighter than this photo.

Diptych--Fall 2010, Salida Landscape

Diptych--Fall 2010

15 x 30

Oil on 2 Boards

We had a fabulous fall in 2010. I took quite a few walks thru various parks and open spaces; each time bringing my camera along to snap photos..... Since the photos were all wonderful, it is often difficult to choose what to paint. I chose this scene because of the leaning tree in the forefront.  It divides the diptych, and yet it also joins the scene together. The composition has both a peacefulness and a tension, similar to the feeling of fall, although strikingly beautiful, you know winter is on its way.

I used both brushes and pallet knives while painting this landscape. When you view the painting in person, you will see the heavy application of oil paint with the pallet knife. This painting is for sale for $500.00 and includes free shipping in the continental USA. E-mail me for more details:  susanmspohn@gmail.com

Jacob's Ladder Garden

Jacob's Ladder Garden

18 x 30

Oil on Board

This wonderful painting was inspired by a photo of Jacob's Ladder,a perennial that is planted in a lot of gardens in these parts. If properly cared for, the flower heads are large and lush and last a long time. I like the bright pinky-red heads of the Jacob's Ladder along with the contrast of the yellow grasses with the blue saliva's in the background. If you would like to adorn your walls with this wonderful garden, please contact me by e-mail, and leave your shipping information. This painting sells for $450.00 and includes shipping in the continental USA. E-mail-- susanmspohn@gmail.com

DAHLIA GARDEN -- DIPTYCH

The size of this painting puts you right in the middle of this garden. The colors glow, and are set off by the dark background. It is painted in oils on two 30 x 30 boards.
