Crowned Crane

Crowned Crane
5 x 7
oil on board

I was looking through some reference photos for inspiration on strong landscape lighting... but didn't find what I was looking for today. Instead I happened upon a series of photos of crowned cranes. I really like this bird as it looks so ornamental. How glorious to walk around with that feathered hat on top of their heads, they are always looking stylish! This painting is for sale for $55.00, It is painted on a beveled 1/2" board there is no need to frame it, but it will fit into a standard 5 x7 inch frame. There is a traditional hanging system on the back. This painting includes free shipping in the Continental USA. All others please contact me regarding shipping costs.

Floral Abundance, Flower Paintings, Garden Paintings, Red Flowers, Yellow Flowers

Floral Abundance
19 x 7
oil on watercolor paper

I actually started this piece a couple days ago, and have just finished it. My photo reference was a wildflower garden up in Winter Park, Colorado that was so filled with flowers, it looked almost unreal. I could have selected just a portion of the photo to inspire me, but instead wanted to express the sheer abundance of flowers. Contact me if you are interested in this painting.

Free Shipping in the Continental USA. Shipping prices are for Continental USA only. Alaska and Hawaii residents please contact me for shipping quotes. European, Canadian and other overseas locations, please contact me for a shipping quote also.

If you are interested in larger paintings, contact me. I post mainly small paintings on this site, but I can paint larger, similar paintings as a focal point for your interiors. Satisfaction guaranteed, before purchase. Copyright 2012, by the artist, Susan M. Spohn

Mrs. Crow's Spring Vision, Floral Paintings, Bird Paintings, Crows, Colorful Paintings, Tulips, Spring Time Flowers, Impressionistic Paintings

MRS. CROW'S SPRING VISION
30 x 30
Oil on Board

I have been working on this painting for a couple days. This story painting came about while browsing thru some reference photos. I had a photo of this crow that I wanted to put into a painting, but I was also longing for springtime since it has been unusually cold for December in these parts, and I was looking at all these wonderful springtime flowers. My imagination took over and  Mrs. Crow became my wistful self enjoying a beautiful spring garden. This painting was created using just brushes (unusual for me...)  I will have to do my next painting with the pallet knives. 'Mrs. Crow's Spring Vision' is painted on 1/4 inch board that is attached to a wood box frame (looking similar to a gallery wrapped canvas) and is for sale for $875.00. Contact me regarding shipping charges. Copyright 2012, by the artist, Susan M. Spohn

Christmas Wrappings, Cat Paintings, Holiday Paintings, Contemporary Paintings, Original Oil paintings, Animal Paintings, Orange, Green, Floral,

Christmas Wrappings
11.5 x 14
oil on watercolor paper
Getting into the holiday spirit, I started my painting with a cat reference photo and the background was very similar in color to the cat. I liked this idea but wanted to do more with it. This basket full of wrapping papers and some Christmas ornaments was just the subtle theme I was looking for to incorporate with this cute tawny cat. I really like how the floral background adds lots of pattern as do the wrapping papers and the basket, not to mention the striping on the cat! This patterning makes the painting very active, and at the same time helps your eye to rest on the cat and the quiet soft yellow wrapping paper.
This painting is for sale for $175.00, contact me by e-mail for more details and shipping information. Copyright 2012, by the artist, Susan M. Spohn

Phoenix Rising, Rooster Paintings, Chicken Paintings, Original Oil Paintings, Contemporary Paintings,Colorful Paintings, Bird Paintings

Phoenix Rooster Rising
15 x 15
Oil on Board

I love the fancy chicken breeds! This is a Phoenix Rooster and they have very long tail feathers that drag behind them, probably not that great of a design for the chicken... but a great visual sight. This rooster is on top of his world enjoying the start of his day with the rising sun. You can also visit my print site to purchase a print of this rooster, simply click the on the animal gallery, then click on the painting  to make a print or card :

Just a quick study of a water lilly pond with some koi fish swimming about in between the pads. The reference photo was not very clear, so I just wanted to work on a basic composition. This study is for sale for $40.00 and includes free shipping in the Continental USA.

Fall Poppies, Red Poppies, Gardens, Small Paintings, Floral Paintings, Colorful Paintings

Fall Poppies
5 x 7
Oil on Board

Looking for more floral subjects, I walked about town this morning hunting for a few remaining blooms.... Frosty nights have turned most flowers crispy and brown or wilted by the cold. But I did find these bright red poppies, their flower petals still waving in the wind, although their coloring was a bit darker. This painting is for sale for $55.00 and includes free shipping in the Continental USA. Click the PayPal icon below to purchase, or contact me by e-mail to arrange for other payment options.

Barnyard Scene, Farm Animal Paintings, Children's Paintings, Kitchen Paintings, Chickens, Roosters, Mixed Media Paintings, Contemporary Painting

Barnyard Scene
12 x 12
Oil on Paper and Board

Here is another experiment with oil on paper and board in a more realistic manner. Again you can see all the under lying texture created by using the paper. And you can see where pieces of the paper show through the oil paint. I am on the fence as to whether or not this really works with this painting. But it turned out to be a cute scene with all the chickens and the sheep. The reference photo of the sheep was the main inspiration for this painting, the chickens were just support players.  This painting is for sale for $150.00.  Copyright 2012, by the artist, Susan M. Longhorn Cow, Western Paintings, Oil Paintings, Cattle Paintings, Mixed Media Painting, Blue, Green, Brown, Earth Tone Paintings,

Longhorn
5 x 7
Oil and Paper on Board
Today's painting was a quick experiment using a new technique of painting with oils on sections of paper adhered to board. I like the abstract and modern quality this technique gives my art, but found it more difficult when painting a piece this small. This process does add more texture, and unexpected design with color as bits of the paper show through and I will continue to explore this painting method. This painting is for sale for $55.00 and includes free shipping in the Continental USA.

Stone Path Gardens

I drove to Colorado Springs yesterday to deliver some of my floral paintings to Stone Path Gardens. This is a delightful gardening shop with a small cafe in back on an upper level. They have beautiful flowers, garden plants, oddities, and landscape plants. The owner Eddie is delightful, and all of their help is knowledgeable and fun.

Here are some of the paintings that will be showing at their garden center.

Their location is just outside Old Colorado City.

They are having a terrific sale right now on plants for your garden and gardening supplies.

You can visit Stone Path Gardens online at: http://stonepathgardens.com/
Visit them today and see my paintings! They are also carrying my small original oil painting cards, specially priced for only $15.00. They also have special prices on my other small paintings.

I like painting fish, I have several aquariums and sometimes paint the fish inside. This grouper was from a photo reference. Gray Rabbit

Gray Rabbit
8 x 10
Oil on Watercolor Paper
I had some watercolor paper already prepared to paint my oils upon, so painted this cute little gray rabbit in a flower bed. Many years ago, when I used to live in Florida, I used to have a whole family of rabbits living in in a petunia garden surrounding a small dwarf orange tree. They never ate my flowers, and the flowers grew so tall and well in that well manured bed; the rabbits were able to hide in some burrow that they dug deep in the midst, and we never saw them, unless they were coming or going...... This painting will be for sale in my bargain bin at my next art show over Labor Day Weekend in Manitou Springs, Colorado. Contact me, if you would like to purchase beforehand. Backyard Bantum

Backyard Bantum
7 x 7
Oil on Board

I really liked the strutting pose of this bird. A fellow artist posted a series of reference photos of her backyard flock. And I think this fellow has the great All American Rooster look about him. Sometimes, when I am at an outdoor art show, I seem to here a lot of comments as to why I only have one chicken painting... as it seems folks like to put lots of chickens in their kitchens.  Well, that makes sense, they are colorful and interesting with great personalities; and what better way to start your day than admiring a great chicken painting! This painting is for sale for $85.00 and includes free shipping in the Continental USA.

Western Scrub Jay, Song Birds, Blue Bird Paintings, Western Paintings, Woods, Nature Paintings, Wildlife Paintings, Minature Paintings

Western Scrub Jay
7 x 7
Oil on Board

With so much going on today (Salida Art Walk), (miniature auction--my 2 donations did well in $$$ raised), (an art reception at the Steamplant featuring 2 artists friends) (and the heat!), I am surprised that I was able to paint. Ah, but somehow, I managed to do another small painting.

Whenever you go camping around here you will no doubt see a scrub jay or two begging for bread, or just swooping down to try and grab some of your garbage.  I like this pose for the scrub jay, as he waits patiently in a tree, just observing.

The first image was taken right after painting, the second a day later  outside as the painting is drying.... and then I will post a final painting here once the painting is completely dry so you can hopefully see how the colors intensify and deepen....OK, I have posted the dried painting as the 3rd image. It was darkening with clouds outside, so the actual painting is brighter than this photo.

Cedar Waxwing, Song Bird

Cedar Waxwing
7 x 7
Oil on Board
I really liked how this Cedar Waxwing bird nearly disappeared into its surroundings, even though it is quite colorful. I seem to be painting a lot of birds lately, but find there is so much variety and color that they are difficult to resist. This painting is for sale for $85.00 and includes free shipping in the Continental USA.

Beauty Among the Thistles
Oil  on Board
30 x 30
This is a different look for one of my paintings. And I like to experiment, when I find a subject or scene that really gets my attention. In this instance, there was a hazy, dreamy quality to this scene with a brilliantly colored goldfinch munching on thistle seeds. There is a peaceful and calm presence to this setting, and I hope you will enjoy this moment in time. Comments? This painting is for sale. $700.00 Contact me by e-mail for purchase and more information.

A Lesser Goldfinch

A Lesser Goldfinch
7 x 7
Oil on Board

Back to painting again today.... between doctor visits, physical therapy, and some how managing to do an art show up in Denver.... I have been very distracted by other matters. I liked my reference photo for this painting, a bird balancing on the tops of a flowering butterfly bush, the bird in pretty yellows, the bush in vibrant complimentary purples.  This painting is for sale for $85.00 and includes free shipping in the Continental USA. Polish Bantum Rooster
7 x 7

I finished this piece a few days ago, but since my old computer crashed I had to wait until a new tower arrived to be able to post again. I used to have a flock of Polish fancy chickens centuries ago and I just love all their whimsical floppy feathers.

HELP, DONATION, CARDS

FALL DOWN --- GO BOOM.
On December 11th, 2010, I fell and injured myself quite substantially. The worst injury was my left arm which they had thought was just a bad sprain with a  fractured wrist and a fractured, dislocated  elbow and chip. It is now April. I was suppose to be healed, but I am still in pain and unable to use this hand. So my Orthopedic surgeon sent me to a wrist specialist, who ordered an MRI which now shows a lot more damage to the wrist, including a dislocated bone, excess fluid, a torn and dangling TFCC stuck and folded into my joint and some ligament damage. All of this will need to be repaired with surgery if I am ever to have use of my left hand and arm again. Plus the surgeon says I will be pain free once I get through all the rehab. But time is of the essence, as it has already been 4 months, the surgeon says it should have been repaired then, but now there are more complications.

THE SOLUTION.
My surgeon and Peak One Surgery Center have been working with me to get me the best financial discounts in order to have this surgery. However, I haven't been able to work due to this injury, and now after this surgery there is a 6 month recovery time. I need help. I can still paint a bit, and I would encourage everyone to pick out and buy one of their favorite paintings; just browse thru my blog. Another option is that I am presently painting some floral abstracts for cards. These are ORIGINAL paintings in a small format of 4 x 6 inches inserted into a card-stock photo frame. I am asking $15.00/per card as a donation to help with my surgery costs. You can contact me for more information/purchase or visit Stone Path Gardens in Colorado Springs, CO to pick out some cards.

UPDATE, April 29, 2011:
I have now had the surgery, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THOSE WHO DONATED OR BOUGHT PAINTINGS!!!! I needed just under $3,000.00 for the down payment, paid at the surgery center. Now, I have LARGE monthly payments of at least $1,200.00/per month, (It maybe more depending on unexpected surgery costs...) for May, June, & July, and then $545.00/month for August, September & October. In addition, I have payments to the Salida hospital of $77.00/month. I cannot work waiting tables with my wrist recuperating and under going more procedures over the next 6 months. I will be painting again as soon as possible, and SINCERELY APPRECIATE any painting purchases or commissions to help me pay for these large medical expenses.

UPDATE 6-8-2011:  Surgery bill that arrived is 4 times the amount I was expecting.....

UPDATE 7 -15-11: DR now says it will take a year from my surgery date to regain full use of my wrist/hand/arm....... and I was counting on the 6 month deadline.....

UPDATE 9-9-11: Wrist bone has been popping up to the skin again, went to see my surgeon again. He took x-rays. They showed the bone in about the SAME POSITION AS BEFORE THE SURGERY! So after all this time, pain and expense, it looks like nothing has changed. He said to keep doing physical therapy and see him in November.

UPDATE 11-11-11:  DR now says I need another surgery. Bone is still dislocated and ligaments still not attached. (elbow still has issues too) He doesn't want to operate again until at least June or July of 2012. So in the meantime I am still injured and need to be very careful not to injure it any further. I do not understand WHY this surgery did not work. And I do not understand WHY I have to wait another 8 months to have surgery which will mean another 8 months to a year for it to heal after surgery.....

Booth Photo at the Las Cruses Art Show

This is a booth photo of my art at the New Mexico Las Cruces Art Show last weekend. The paintings are larger than they look, because I have 8 foot tall show panels. The front floral diptych is 5 ft in length. My next art show will be in June in downtown Denver, CO

A local TV station did some interviews and shot some footage of the show. My booth is at the end of the clip, this was when I was still getting my booth set up for the day, so I wasn't paying attention to the person shooting this film.

Pet Portraits, Black and White Cat

Donna's Cat
7 x 7 (oil on board)
My friend and fellow artist, Donna, displayed this portrait of her cat (Lightning) that I painted last month, in her booth while we were showing at our recent show in Las Cruses, NM. So for a limited time, you too can have your pet immortalized in oil paint in an artsy manner, like Donna's cat, Lightning. Send me several good photos (preferably head shots) by e-mail, or if you prefer, regular postal mail (PO Box 1231, Salida, CO 81201) Please write down your pet's true eye color, as it is often difficult to discern in a photo. Also, please include your e-mail address or phone number in case I have additional questions. These will be pet portraits done on 7 x7 board and they will only cost $85.00, including free shipping in the Continental USA. (if you would like a larger size portrait, such as a 15 x 15 the cost will be $225.00 and there will be a small shipping charge)
